Recipes, Although Inspired, are Not the Bible (Or, how I had a revelation and skipped the pizza on CSA pickup night)

So I was standing in line at CSA pickup tonight STARVING. For breakfast I had a half cup of granola and some raw milk. Lunch was a leftover piece of grilled KFC and about half a cup of leftover vegan chili from lunch out the other day. I’ve been eating crappy the past few days as I never did get around to meal planning and have had some late nights at work. Pizza crossed my mind . . .

Fresh Corn Saute

There’s a definite chill in the air, and summer is definitely over. Not sure how much longer fresh sweet corn will be available, but if you do have some to use up, this is an excellent side dish.

Hot German Green Bean Salad

Fresh beans are infinitely better than the canned version. The addition of bacon makes this side dish out of this world (bacon has a way of doing that . . . )

Fennel Leek Soup

Last week since I was out of state I gave my CSA share for the week to someone else. So, I had the unique experience of going to the farmer’s market and buying whatever I wanted. Ha! I knew I would make this soup, since I usually only get one fennel bulb at a time at the CSA and this requires three.

Great (or at least edible) Green Pasta

Now that I’m trying to wrap up Simply in Season, I’m coming across recipes that I wasn’t too interested in making last time I cracked it open. Great Green Vegetable Pasta, with its use of blended up cottage cheese (a technique I used before but don’t recall which recipe), was one of them. So I decided to wing a variation on my own.

Heartland: The Cookbook {Book Review}

heartland

Last week on the drive from Idaho to Michigan (helping my sister move), I reviewed several books on my Nook. One of them was Heartland: The Cookbook by Judith Fertig. Driving on I-80 through America’s heartland was the perfect setting for reading about the Midwest’s cooking traditions and updated recipes.

You Can’t Out-Exercise Your Bad Eating Habits (Darn It)

Our triathlon training group, 2008

It’s been a long time since I posted a Fitness Friday update. After breaking through my plateau upon returning from Africa, I seem to have stalled out again. Recently DH and I started Couch to 5K as it’s been awhile since we have done triathlons. However, I know from experience that exercise is not the magic bullet for weight loss. When Tony from Fit Marriage recently contacted me and offered to write a guest post, I knew exactly the topic!

Real {Fast} Food {Book Review}

RFF_landscape

For some reason, because DH and I don’t have kids, people think we have all this free time. While it’s true that our free time is truly our own, we both work 40+ hour workweeks. Throw in church, brew club meetings, blogger meetings, couch to 5K, covering local food events for my other blog, and spending time with friends and extended family and we have the same challenges time-wise that parents do. So I was super excited when Trina asked {Read More}

Fried Okra

Okra is one of those vegetables I never cooked before working my way through Simply in Season. But I’ve come to enjoy it. This is a super simple recipe that’s a great side dish.

Summer Garden Ratatouille

This is one of those recipes that is great for using up whatever vegetables you have from your garden or CSA and lets the taste of the vegetables come through.
