Eating and living locally . . . mindfully . . . simply.

For the record, I know that ground cherries are NOT the same as regular cherries. Ground cherries are similar to tomatillos and need to be husked. However, I did not have ground cherries, nor have I seen them at the farmer’s market, so I decided to use regular cherries for this recipe from Simply in Season.
Back from camping over the long weekend, back to reality. No more easy suppers on the grill (cooked by the men!). Alas, my CSA share beckons as I have some greens to use up. Here are 10 things that are on the menu for this week. Recipes will be coming over the next week or so, so be sure to come back! At first I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to make this soup from Simply in Season. I only get a handful of peas at a time from my CSA, and the shelling peas were washed away in my garden (I have plenty of snow peas though!). Luckily for me I found a little booth at the farmer’s market where they were selling peas that were already shelled! Well worth it to me.

This 4th of July I’d like to remind everyone of America’s heroes–the farmer. Without farms, we would have no food. In honor of America’s farmers, I’m reprinting an article from Sustainable Table (they have lots of articles and information that bloggers and others can use for free. I love their site!)

When I saw this recipe in Simply in Season I thought “yay, I have a mulberry tree!” Unfortunately the dogs love to eat the mulberries off the ground, and the birds eat the ones on the tree. So between them I don’t have many mulberries. I decided to substitute a mix of currants and blueberries instead for the 4th of July weekend.
Is anyone else wondering if they really do make hemp underwear? I did do some googling, and most of the hemp underwear seems to be men’s boxers. Ladies briefs tend to be organic cotton. Regardless, the lucky winners this week are Cindy and Benita! This is Cindy’s second win, so I may have to implement a rule about the number of times you can win. Any thoughts about that? Let me know in the comments!

So, I’ve been dying to review Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America’s Farmers for awhile now, but I wanted to wait until I had a chance to try some of the recipes. With CSA season starting, I had the chance to sample a few.

Here is a more from-scratch pasta dish. Ahem. I apologize in advance for not having printable versions or nutritional info. Please bear with me while I get my programs back from the great lightning strike/computer massacre.
