Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Mis en Place

tip-300x225

Long lists of herbs and spices used to intimidate me. And I would burn something while I scrambled around the cupboard, trying to find a spice and the measuring spoon I needed. Then I heard about mis en place. Basically you measure out everything ahead of time – before you start cooking! Brilliant, huh? This [...]

Vegetable Vindaloo

vindaloo

I’ve made this recipe from Simply in Season before (way before I started this blog). It didn’t turn out as well as I remembered – read to find out why!

Naan Bread

DH and I LOVE Indian food. In fact our first date was at Bombay Cuisine. I’ve always wanted to make naan at home–luckily Simply in Season had the recipe!

CSA & Garden Update 7/17

cherrytomatoes

I’m thankful for my CSA share. Nothing from the garden yet except for a couple of cherry tomatoes and herbs, but from the CSA this week I got Swiss chard, kale, chives, green onions, fennel, two zucchini, carrots, and salad greens. For more gardening fun check out Monday Garden Club

Cupcake Provocateur Apron Giveaway!

apron

I’m a bit behind in my cookbook reviews (especially after realizing how many recipes I need to do before the end of August!). Luckily Cynthia over at the Cupcake Provocateur offered to sponsor a giveaway for my readers. She is providing the apron pictured above – isn’t it cool? ($35 value!) I love aprons. I [...]

Chard or Kale Enchiladas

enchilada

I know, I’ve teased you with this recipe before. I finally got around to making it. I ended up using kale AND chard, since the one bunch of chard didn’t equal a pound. This is from the fall section of Simply in Season. But kale and chard are great all year round!

wedding-202x300

My friend Julie over at Dutch Being Me is posting all about weddings this week . . . her brother is getting married this weekend! Check it out, we’re today’s featured couple.

Middle Eastern Meatloaf

meatloaf

This was one of the first recipes I made when I first bought Simply in Season, and it remains one of my favorites. I just love the combination of spices.

Venison (or beef) Meatballs

meatball

I am so thankful for DH. I was making this for Sunday dinner to bring to my parent’s, when I realized that the ground venison we got out last night wasn’t thawed. So he drove to the store to pick up some fresh ground beef. Dinner was saved!

Black Walnut Cake

cake

I cheaped out and used regular walnuts instead of black walnuts for this recipe from Simply in Season. But I did get a chance to actually use my Cooks Illustrated online subscription because it didn’t include a recipe for the frosting. It turned out great!
