Weekly Roundup and Winners 6/12

School for Working Girls in Bangladesh

In 2004 I had the privilege of visiting Bangladesh. I had just started working for the international relief & development organization for which I still work. In high school I had gone on a youth group mission trip to Costa Rica, and in college I studied for a summer in London, but I had never [...]

Food & Faith Challenge: Local Farms

napkin1

In an age long past the industrial revolution, it is still the humble farmer that feeds the world. The first occupation as decreed by God is arguably still the most valuable to man. Without our farmers, where would we be?

First CSA Pickup of the Season!

scallions

FINALLY! You can now expect lots more recipes. As I said before, it’s been pretty hot and chilis and stews were just not appealing. But now I have lots of glorious green to play with! So what was waiting for me when I arrived at pickup?

Dandelion Bacon Salad

dandelion bacon salad

While the title of this recipe is Dandelion Bacon Salad, Simply in Season says you can use any kind of greens. Good thing; while I do have dandelions in my yard, I do have two dogs. Our neighbors also have dogs. So I felt much safer just using some of the greens that came with my first CSA pickup.

Edible Communities: A Book Review

edibleBook3d

When DH and I were married four years ago, we spent our honeymoon at Black Star Farms just north of Traverse City in Suttons Bay. Even then, before I started learning about the local food movement, I loved learning about different foods and wines and the people who grew and made them. And I was [...]

Please Share Your Time Saving Tips

Is it just me, or are there TONS of resources out there for saving money? *Cough cough* Real Food on a Real Budget ad on your right. Frugal blogs galore. And, there are lots of “how to cook” e-courses floating around. Yet my biggest stumbling block is TIME. I’m not alone. When I was on [...]

Bulgarian Yogurt Cake

cake

I’m not sure why, but a couple of the cakes in Simply in Season don’t have recipes for frosting. Does that mean they don’t have frosting? What is a cake without frosting? Since I had apricots and prunes left over from making the Pork Apricot Skillet and Marrakesh Lamb Stew, I thought I’d give the Bulgarian Yogurt Cake a try. I made it for Sunday dinner at my parents, and brought along some powdered sugar just in case it needed frosting after all.

Sesame Garlic Glaze for Meat and Greens

glaze

This is a recipe from From Asparagus to Zucchini that I found last year when I was searching for a bok choy recipe. Before I realized that you can use glazes like this for any type of green or stir fry or meat. After taking a few classes at my CSA, I realized that a couple of glazes / stir fry sauces / salad dressings in your back pocket can make very efficient (and delicious!) use of most any vegetable that comes your way. This has become one of our favorites.
