Portland recap: Or why I need a vacation to recover from my vacation

Can I just say, I’m falling in love with the west coast? When I arrived in Seattle, I stayed at an independent hotel. I asked if there were any restaurants nearby, preferably not a chain. The woman behind the desk cheerfully supplied several suggestions – all within walking distance, all independently owned, and didn’t give me any funny looks. And for the most part, the restaurants I visited the rest of the week (which were chosen simply because they were {Read More}

Palm Sunday, and a Food & Faith Challenge Reminder

Sprout.

Today is Palm Sunday. Let us remember our calling and Christ’s journey. Next week we’ll be starting the Food & Faith Challenge! A few announcements: There are two guest post spots remaining – on globalization and fair trade. Let me know if you’re interested! Please, as we go along in our journey we may encounter differences of opinion. I ask that you respect other people’s opinion, even if you do not share it. If anyone is disrespectful your comments will {Read More}

Eating Healthy on the Go: Greetings from Seattle!

So far I’ve had a great trip in Seattle. I spoke at a very welcoming church on Sunday, and had lunch afterward with two former missionaries who were interns in Malawi. They turned out to be fellow foodies, and made some delicious salmon, asparagus, and couscous. We had some great discussions around food, eating locally, and how when you visit (or more so live) in a developing country, your attitudes towards food changes. For one, you can’t just head down {Read More}

5 Simple Tips to Avoid Heart Disease

Hi everyone! I’m enjoying my work in Seattle this week. I hope to have some foodie posts in the next couple of days (when I have time to actually go to restaurants, rather than spending all day doing site visits and board meetings). My friend Henry at Time as Wine graciously offered to write this guest post for my readers. I really enjoyed it, and I hope you do too! I added some of my favorite recipes as links in {Read More}

DH Smokes Brisket for Michigan Meat Eater’s Day

In case you haven’t heard, last Saturday Governor Granholm declared a Meat Out Day for Michigan. Well, the hunters and farmers in this state weren’t very happy about that, so they declared a Meat Eater’s Day instead. While I do agree that we probably eat too much meat for our waistlines and wallets (do we really need 16 ounce steaks?), the Governor should have known that in our economy simply declaring Meat Out Day with no explanation would go over {Read More}

Hazelnut Coffee Brownies

Remember those roasted hazelnuts I told you about? This is what I made with them. Hazelnut Coffee Brownies. I LOVE coffee, so I knew I’d love these brownies. The best part? They’re actually not too bad in calories. My coworkers loved them. Then again, they’re impressed by anything not bought at Meijer’s – especially if it’s not from a boxed mix! Pin It

Simply in Season concludes each chapter with what it calls a section of “Extras.” This is a feature that was more prominent in More with Less, but there are some neat how-tos in Simply in Season as well. This is one of them.

Don’t forget the Food & Faith Challenge!

Only two more weeks until the Food & Faith Challenge begins! No matter where you are on your food journey, you will look at things in a new way. Be inspired to try new things. I hope you’ll join us!

Turkey Barley Soup

OK, so I promised to tell you what I made with the leftover broth from making the risotto. When I came home the house smelled heavenly. The cinnamon, chicken, and other flavors that went into making the chicken stock were just awesome. I dumped the contents of the crock pot into a bowl with a cheesecloth-lined strainer and measured out the broth I’d need for the risotto. And then I realized that I had Turkey Barley Soup from Simply in {Read More}

Fitness Friday: On Building Good Habits, and Trying to Be a Food Renegade

It’s been awhile since I posted a Fitness Friday report. How am I doing? I have lost 12 pounds so far since mid-January. Not bad, but not super good either since a lot of that was at the beginning. I’ve found myself falling off the wagon here and there. Time to recommit. I finished my Move it to Lose it program this week at the YMCA, which provided great workouts but I found myself disagreeing with a lot of the {Read More}
