Gaia Cafe: Where the Local Cook Goes when Her Kitchen is a Wreck

For the past couple of days the stove and refrigerator have been in my living room. DH moved them so he could finish putting the tile in our dining room and kitchen.

On the right is where my refrigerator should be

My stove should be straight ahead. The floor looks nice though :-)

On Sunday I very easily could have made waffles. But I didn’t. DH and I will take any excuse opportunity to eat at Gaia Cafe.

Gaia Cafe is in Eastown, a neighborhood in Grand Rapids where I'd love to live if DH didn't insist on having an extra garage.

It's a vegetarian restaurant, all fresh and local when possible. Definitely outside of MIL's comfort zone because they don't have Pepsi or Coke.

This is what you see when you first walk in. Note the super yummy vegan cookies on the counter.

You serve yourself coffee and water while waiting for your waitress. A fair trade organic option is available.

I don't know why I even bother opening the menu. I order the same thing every time!

No aspartame here!

Cuban eggs. This is what I get every time. Two eggs, black beans, brown rice, green salsa, on a tortilla topped with sour cream, lettuce, and tomato.

DH and I split this HUGE bowl of fruit. Not local, not in season, but definitely tasty.

Will I be glad when my floors are done and my stove is plugged in, and I can get into the refrigerator without climbing over the dining room set and boxes of building supplies? Yes. Did I also love eating at Gaia’s? Yes.

Even The Local Cook needs a day off now and then.

  1. Awww man! I love Gaia and totally agree on the Cuban eggs. My kids like it too, I like the atmosphere for them, it’s not all hyper and I think kids need to learn how to just hang out and not be all Chuck E Cheesified all the time.

Oooh – I love Gaia! I haven’t had their Cuban eggs in forever. Will have to amend that soon enough now that I”ve seen a photo. I’m a sucker for food photos! And the vegan cookies… Oh dear…
