On Safari until November 22

malawiWell, not really. I will be going to Uganda and Zambia for work. Normally when I travel for work my days are spent in meetings from sunup to sundown, with little time for sightseeing.  I do try to take in the local cuisine when I can, as you can see in this photo of me learning how to make nshima when I was in Malawi a couple of years ago.

I  really hope that our field staff will allow me to spend some time in their kitchen with the cooks, and also that they don’t feed us North American food. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves (although I’d never tell them that). Part of the joy in traveling and learning about other cultures is sampling their local cuisine.

If I am able to access the internet I will try to post, but in the meantime keep on cooking!

Take pictures, enjoy the divine ordinary of the new place, and travel safe, Wendy!

I hope your trip is going great!

Hi! I came to your site after reading about it in the Canadian Mennonite, a bi-weekly publication. ‘Turns out I love it! (your site, I mean) For example, when I read that you’re going to Africa for work and that you want to eat their local food, it reminded me of my own insistence to eat and sleep with the locals when I was in Africa. Which also happens to be where I met my husband. Then as I read further, I noticed you value simple living and ethical consideration to questions like large scale farming and eating locally. These are questions we wrestle with, too… I have put a link to your site on our blog – I hope you don’t mind.

Hi Wendy,

I just found your blog via Valerie’s—I’ll be following you!

Thanks, Irish Canucks! I’m so glad you like the site. Of course I don’t mind the link. I hope you are enjoying Dublin. I visited there when I did a summer study abroad in London (more years ago than I care to admit). – Wendy
